Teaching practice: Sesson 2

Much better than anticipated. The first week of my teaching practice was very welcoming and informative. I have learnt quite a few things from my mentors. Even though I am an incoming teacher, I still do learn things each and every day. This is pivotal for any teacher who intends to provide their learners with quality education to maintain a open mind and develop a culture of learning not only amongst the learners but amongst themselves.

Time flies

Gosh, it is the middle of the year and my second teaching practice session is approaching soon... Is it only me or has this year truly flown by? Fast forward past another six months and I am officially a qualified teacher :)  I feel that I have been truly blessed to have come so far and will continue to strive to do my best. End goal: Be the best teacher possible...

Teaching Principles

I came across the blog of David Goldberg https://dgoldblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/my-vision-of-being-a-teacher/ whereby he describes his vision of being a teacher. There were five principles which I felt were critical in the art of teaching. David Goldberg (2010) states:

1.      I will hold my students to a standard above and beyond who they know themselves to be and give them the support they need to find themselves in a larger skilled identity.

2.      I will be a professional teacher.

3.      I can be very funny, but almost never on purpose.

4.      My class will loose and personable, but within rigid expectations of performance and respect.

5.      I will hold my student to a standard of being conscientious adults while taking in to account the reality that they are not adults.

The qualities and characteristics of a teacher

A teacher poses many qualities and characteristics which define who they are. As a teacher, it is your duty to be an example to our future generation and a pillar to the community. Here are a few simple qualities or characteristics that describe the word teacher:

E         -           Enthusiastic

A         -           Assertive

C         -           Courageous

H         -           Hardworking

Envision yourself not only as a teacher but as so much more. A teacher is a:
Þ    Reader
Þ    Researcher
Þ    Life-long Learner

Education is the key

I came across an article which was published a year ago on News24 and I can truly say that I felt the passion in the words of the writer concerning the topic of education as a key to improve not only the lives of South Africans but our country as a whole – http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/South-Africans-education-is-key-20150529 [South Africans, education is key]. The article starts off introducing a Professor of Economics at Harvard University: Roland Fryer. What makes this interesting is that Roland Fryer is only 30 years of age.

What is means to be a teacher?

Teaching is one of the most rewarding professions that will ever be in existence. Being a teacher is more than just a profession. It is one of the only professions which allow you as the teacher to not only make a difference but also to create other professions. It all starts at the institution of learning: the classroom in any school. My vision as a teacher will not merely consist of being an ordinary teacher but to be an extraordinary teacher that will truly make an impact.

End of Teaching Practice

Today is officially the end of Teaching Practice. It has truly been one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. There were ups and downs but in the end I managed. I discovered that teaching should be a passion and not merely just a day job. The greatest gift that teaching can provide a teacher with at the end of the day is when you as the teacher know that you have made a difference in the lives of the learners.

Teachers getting licensed

Today I came across an interesting article concerning the state planning to license teachers http://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/western-cape/state-plans-to-license-teachers-2015513. I have mixed views concerning this particular article. In a sense, it is a good idea to ensure that the level of professionalism increases amongst teachers and assist in improving the quality of education in schools. In another sense, I also feel that teachers have many issues to deal with and this might add on to it in terms of obtaining the license. However, the issue is up for debate and I will certainly continue to follow the story as it progresses.

A day after teaching

First week of Teaching Practice

First week of Teaching Practice done and dusted. It is really a different feeling when the roles are reversed. I still feel like one of the learners however I am slowly adjusting to the reality of being an incoming teacher. Teaching has its ups and downs but I am determined to show my worth and help change learners perspective to education. The week has been tiring but I am always up for a challenge.

Teaching Practice Preparation

Prepare! Prepare! Prepare!

So much to do, so little time. I am so excited for teaching practice but so nervous as well. Hopefully my three rules that I have set out for myself works:

  1. Research and Prepare
  2. Keep Focus
  3. Have Fun
